Leading from Below

A short read this week ... "Leading from Below" available online at WSJ. This focusses on mid and lower management people coming into the corporate responsibility circle. I have heard from my many of my engineering friends that their bosses are just there to fill the places and they would perform better if they were left their own way. I suppose, this article is aimed at such bosses.
Like how the article points out, many bosses are comfortable in their service and governance role - leading their teams, giving update on what is happening to their product, how their product interacts with other products, etc. But there are few, who look more that what is required of their role. They step up to see how they can define new things in the corporate and the technology world. One aspect that the paper pointed out is very relevant nowadays ... "In an age when job cuts are common at even the most successful companies, being a good manager who doesn't make waves is increasingly risky." I hope that each and every 'comfortable' boss tries to shirk of his/her cosy environment and start to take risks and start to lead - not manage.
